Our Home

My family just moved across two states to move into our new home three months ago.  This is our first time owning a home, as we have rented only in the past.  This is a whole new experience for us!  Gone are the days that we call our landlord about our A/C unit not working or that our front door has a catch.  Gone are the days where we were blissfully not paying insurance or escrow.  Gone are the days where we knew we weren't staying.

Owning a home is tough.  You have to invest in a home warranty so you're not totally on the hook for appliance repair and replacement.  You have to get the bug guy to come spray or do it yourself.  You have to take that front door off of its hinges to sand it down in that one spot because the humidity is so high it has warped.  Everything that goes wrong with your new home...you're now on the hook for.  Whether it be replacing the lights on your 12 ft ceilings (when you don't even own a ladder) or getting the septic tank treated, it's all you, BooBoo.

Don't let me scare you, though.  Owning has a lot of perks, too.

I will say that owning a home is much more relaxed than renting.  You can actually change things without running to that file to make sure the contract says it's okay.  You can surprise your significant other with a puppy on their birthday without worrying that you missed the line about pets or having a fee tacked onto your rent each month.

No, owning a house is all you.  You can rip out those ugly, unruly bushes near the front door because those are your ugly, unruly bushes.  You can pour concrete or lay down gravel to make your parking area bigger for when you host events.  You can decide what happens to that super old mailbox near the street or that the paint on your walls is outdated.  You can install a porch swing.  You can get your kids a Little Tykes jungle gym because that is your grass that you will be killing or putting divots in.

But here's the best part... You never have to move again.

Side note:  I cannot stand moving.  Going through every bit of junk you own to decide where it's going.  It's tedious, messy, and totally exhausting.

Some things are easy to decide.  That bouquet my Grandmama made for me to hold at my wedding?  Taking it!  A dress I know that I'll probably never fit in again?  Goodwill.

Others are not so easy, though.  That stuffed football plush that is from hub's high school?  Eh.... maybe.  He'll never use it...  It is a plush football, after all.  Not very manly in the slightest.  It has a hole in it that I have no clue as to how to repair.  Because of the outstanding hole, our boys probably won't ever play with it.  But it is from his high school.  It's a symbol of his days as a dorky, gangly high school student who worked at a grocery store and enjoyed football games and hanging out with the friends that are now scattered with their own families.

Ultimately, the football plush came with us.  It's currently sitting on our bookshelf with the many movies I have in my collection.  But the point is, the thought process each seemingly unimportant item took was pure torture.  I will be ecstatic if I never have to move again.

Sure, there are circumstances that you may need to move.  Unforeseen accidents, forces of nature, employment changes and opportunities... the list goes on.  BUT!  You won't have someone else's name on that title.  You won't have a day where that person calls and says that they've decided to list the house you're in to sell.  You won't have a deadline that you have to be out because your contract says so.

My husband and I have been very blessed.  In the 4.5 years we've been married, we have only rented from two different people... Only one of which were uncooperative and mean.  There are definitely others who have had it much worse.

Point is, now we own our first home.  We have very few decorations because we knew we weren't staying in our other houses forever.  We just weren't concerned with making those houses a home.  But now we are.

Our house is sparsely decorated and the walls aren't all that interesting.  I've started acquiring little bits and pieces of decor, but I never realized how expensive decorating is.  I have a grand total of one corner of my house decorated.  Just one.

It's a start, right?
